Working in Berega, Tanzania
Berega is a group of villages in a rural area in the mountains of central Tanzania, 300km inland from Dar-es-Salaam.
As a rural community, access to health care and education has been limited in the past. However, through the work of the local church, in partnership with our mission agency Hope Filled Horizons and the charity BREAD (Berega Relief Equipment And Development) there have been a range of developments in these key areas.
These challenges continue and we partner with the local community to assess needs and implement new transformation programmes. Please see below for more information.
-
CCT is widely used in East Africa and around the world. We started CCT in Berega several years ago and it is empowering the communities in Berega and the surrounding areas to thrive and develop – the changes we have seen are so encouraging but there is much more potential still to come!
-
We support the development of the 120 bed, five ward hospital including a Maternity ward and Neonatal unit and an operating theatre. We have workers who regularly travel out to Berega in order to teach and encourage the staff and students.
-
The School of Nursing in Berega (SONAB) was founded in 2010 to train nurse-midwives, and it has thrived and expanded in to the Berega Institute of Health Sciences, training pharmacy students and Clinical Officers as well as nurses. We are involved in teaching and helping them develop their expanding programmes.

Patmo cares for 12 to 20 babies whose mothers have died in childbirth. During their time in the orphanage they are cared for by the staff as well as a relative such as a cousin or older sibling who is able to continue with their own education. When they are fully weaned and thriving, at around three years of age, they are able to return to their father and grandparents in the villages. We visit to provide medical advice for the staff in their care of the babies and toddlers.

We are involved in teaching English, and in helping and encouraging the teachers.
