Starting Points

Many Christians, as well as non-Christians, are struggling with fear. We fear for our future and for the future of our loved ones. We fear illness, death, poverty, losing our homes and jobs, rejection, hurt, betrayal, singleness, loneliness, embarrassment and not being in control.

As Christians, we experience many storms in our lives and just as the disciples in the Bible, we tend to focus on the circumstances around us and the storm instead of focusing on Jesus.

Fear makes us forget everything that God has already accomplished in our lives and it gives the enemy the power. When Jesus died on the cross he overcame Satan and, now, as His children, we live free from every power of the enemy. However, often our lives do not echo this truth, instead we allow fear to dictate our lives and we live with constant anxiety and depression.

‘Do not fear’ is the most repeated phrase in the bible. God does not want us to fear.

Exodus 14:14 says, “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

The Lord reassures us that we do not need to fear any plan of the enemy, any actions of the wicked or “any weapon or accusation” fashioned against us.

Fear is an emotion and as humans it is natural to fear, however, fear is something that can consume our emotions, paralyse us and keep us from our potential.

When we are afraid, we need to let Him override the situation with His presence so that the emotion of fear does not become a spirit of fear that is in control of us.

2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit in you means that you already have all you need to do what God wants for you. We do not need to fear.

We have to decide to not fix our eyes on the problem but intentionally fix our eyes on Jesus.

One of the best ways to overcome fear is to look at God’s promises and have faith in them. When we fear we need to look at the Word and see what He says about our health, purpose, children, future and salvation.

How Do I Pray?

Heavenly Father,

The future can appear daunting and uncertain, but I place my trust in you. Help me release my anxiety about what lies ahead and focus on the present moment. Grant me the wisdom to make the most of each day and the faith to believe that you hold my future in your loving hands. Thank you for your constant presence, which brings peace to my restless heart. Help me find the strength to let go of my worries about the future and to walk in faith, knowing that you have a beautiful plan in store for me.

Father God, my mind is troubled, and my heart is heavy with fear. I ask for Your peace to calm my anxious thoughts. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, so I may experience the tranquility that only You can provide. Help me to cast all my cares upon You, knowing that You care for me. Let Your peace reign in my heart and mind. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
