YADA

Nyarumanga

Situated next to the city dump, resourceful families recycle to earn a living, although often at the cost of a child's education.

OUR PASSION
To partner with families in identifying the desires and dreams of the community and find solutions to create sustainable change, while always pointing to Jesus.

OUR MISSION
We help the community to build sustainable programmes in education, business and health/nutrition.

  • The community of Nyarumanga consists of 60 beautiful families with a complicated history. Mostly consisting of Batwa, a marginalised ethnic minority in Burundi, they were forcibly removed from their land in decades past and relocated in this area in the northern part of Bujumbura – the city rubbish dump. Due to a lack of resources and investment, as well as a lifetime of trauma, these families have resorted to the dump as their main source of living.

Instead of going to school, children sort through piles of burning refuse to find something to eat. Instead of securing jobs, mothers and fathers cull through the trash in hopes of selling anything of remote value. It is a grim existence. Yet, this community of clever people are incredibly resourceful and intuitive. The children creatively craft toys out of plastic bottles and old tires, and the parents are full to the brim with ideas for lucrative businesses. They are a people of integrity and dignity who want to work hard to support themselves and their families.

Having filled hungry bellies and helped with the reclamation of crops, land and properties, we now commit to helping the community to build sustainable programmes. We’re focusing on three areas:

    1. Education: We offer after-school tuition, pastoral care, a daily meal and a teacher who attends school with them once a week for additional tutoring.

    2. Business: We work together with the community leaders to create business opportunities so they are able to provide for their families with dignity.

    3. Health & nutrition: This community has the right to preventative medical knowledge and sufficient remedial care. We want to help that happen.

Fundraising Projects

  • One of the key investments we are making in this village is to help people build homes that are not made from sticks and grass. A place that is safe and watertight and will give families an environment where they can flourish. The villages have their own plots of land and we are helping them build together in phases so that everyone benefits at the same time. We have about 40 homes to build and any contribution to that would be highly appreciated.
